Which fairs are worth it for machinery and packaging buyers?
Three events lead the list: MAKTEK Eurasia (machine tools and CNC), Metal Expo Eurasia (metals and production technology) and Fastener Expo Eurasia (industrial fasteners). If you can only make one trip, choose the last week of September.
The other fairs are not worthless — they simply are not aimed at you. A jewellery or cosmetics fair is time lost for an industrial machinery buyer. These are the ones to take seriously:
- MAKTEK Eurasia (28 Sep – 3 Oct, Tüyap): the region's leading machine-tool and CNC event. If you are looking for lathes, milling machines, cutting systems or a metalworking line, this one alone justifies the trip.
- Metal Expo Eurasia (16–18 Sep, IFM): for sourcing sheet, profile and structural steel, and also metal-processing machinery.
- Fastener Expo Eurasia (17–20 Sep, Tüyap): bolts, fixings and standard industrial components — a category bought repeatedly, where finding a stable supplier pays off for years.
- F Istanbul (26–29 Aug, IFM): its production-technology section covers food processing and packaging machinery.

What is the difference between IFM and Tüyap?
Both are on Istanbul's European side. IFM (Istanbul Expo Center) sits in Yeşilköy next to the former Atatürk Airport and is easier to reach. Tüyap is in Büyükçekmece, roughly 40 km west of the city centre, and needs more travel time.
This matters for planning. Trying to cover both venues in a single day means spending most of it in traffic. Allow one full day per venue, and book your hotel on the same side of the city as the fair you care about most. During fair weeks, Tüyap usually runs free shuttle services from several points in the city.
What do you need before visiting a fair in Istanbul?
Online visitor registration (normally free via the official fair website), business cards, and a pre-planned list of stands. Without preparation, a large fair simply cannot be covered in one day.
- Register online in advance. Most specialised fairs admit trade visitors free if registered beforehand; on-site registration usually costs money and time.
- Download the exhibitor list published on the fair website a few days ahead, and mark 15–20 target stands before you travel.
- Bring written technical specifications. "I need a filling machine" is not something anyone can quote against — work through our pre-import specification checklist first.
- Business cards and a short company profile, ideally in English. Exhibitors meet hundreds of people a day; without a card you are forgotten by evening.
How do you get the most out of a single fair day?
Book meetings with target stands before you travel, focus on specifications and indicative pricing while on site rather than small talk, and write notes immediately after each meeting. Save real negotiation for afterwards, in writing.
The most common mistake is arriving without appointments and expecting a sales manager to make time. On a busy day, exhibitors prioritise visitors who emailed ahead. A short message two weeks before the fair is the difference between five minutes standing up and forty-five minutes seated with samples and catalogues.
Second: the price quoted at a fair is almost never final. Record it as a starting point and run the serious negotiation later, in writing — ideally through someone on the ground in Turkey who can keep following up after the halls empty.
